144 hour visa free ok to have connecting flight

We are US citizens flying to Beijing from US, staying 6 days and flying to Hong Kong. When we depart Hong Kong we have a flight back to the US that has a 90 minute layover in Shanghai. We will just be changing planes. Is that ok to be free transit still if only changing planes and not leaving the airport at all?

You are able to use the free transit in Beijing and Shanghai in both ways. No visa will be needed. Nice trip.
