About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Transit Visa. I am a Canadian Passport holder

and traveling to Sri Lanka in December and returning in January. On both routes I propose to fly through Shanghai Pu Dong. Is a visa required for me if I will be in transit for 17 hours. I would also like to rent a room in the Airport hotel to sleep it off. Is it possible to go out and rest in the hotel before the connecting flight? Please advise.

You are eligible for 24h twov in Shanghai. Leaving the airport without a visa for a layover under 24 hours is at the immigration officer's discretion. Some reported that bringing a hotel reservation will help. You can have a try.
