About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Eligible for 24-Hour Transit Visa?

We arrive in Shanghai Terminal 1 at 17:20PM (for transit) then depart from Shanghai Terminal 1 at 21:15PM to arrive at Beijing 11:45PM the same day. We then plan to clear Immigration/Customs (to visit Beijing/Great Wall, stay at hotel for the night), and then return to the airport the following day, departing from Beijing at 11:45PM.

Do we need to clear Immigration/Customs at Shanghai Airport (and therefore not be eligible for the 24-Hour Direct Transit) or as we are arriving/departing from Shanghai T1, will be clear Immigration/Customs at Beijing instead, and therefore be eligible for the 24-Hour Direct Transit?

Kindly advise. Thank you so much for your assistance.

You must get a visa in advance, or change your flights. Two stops in China immediately limits you to 24 hours free transit. Shanghai to Beijing is not allowed under 144 hours free transit. You will clear immigration in Shanghai and continue on a domestic flight.

You clear immigration in Shanghai as it is your point of entry and you'll stay 42h in China so you have to apply for a visa in advance.
Btw. a transit visa is something totally different as the 24h transit you're referring to.
