About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

72 hour transit fee

We're travelling air china from the UK to Shanghai (with a brief transit in Chengdu), before flying out of Shanghai to Indonesia (less than 72hrs later after arrival in Chengdu/Mainland China). Doing the same on the way back. Given the Air China flight stops in Chengdu, I guess we're not eligible for the 72hr exemption?

Correct, two stops limits you to 24 hours transit without visa.
