About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Flight to Shanghai overnight stay then board cruise ship

We are flying from Heathrow UK arriving at Shanghai Pu Dong Airport. We will be staying overnight and then next day boarding a cruise ship heading for Hong Kong.
Do we need a visa or will we qualify for the free transit

You qualify for the free transit policy in China. Nice trip.

Hi thanks for you reply. Do we ask for the 72hr free transit when we check in at the UK airport. I spoke to the airline in the UK and they said I need to contact the China embassy (but they never answer their phone) I’m very confused. From what I’ve read on this site we ask before leaving the UK then we get passport stamped on arrival in Shanghai and the hotel notifies the police. Is this correct.

That's pretty much how it works, although the formal application won't be processed until you see the immigration officer after the form is filled out and your fingerprints are collected. Airlines are only responsible for document checks and the reason for telling the airline at check-in is for them to issue your boarding passes and nothing else.
