Is there one currency we can use in all 3 areas or do I need to pre purchase 3 different currencies?

We are travelling to China from Australia visiting Beijing, Shanghai and also Hong Kong and Macau. Many thanks for your assistance

No, there isn't. China Yuan is mainly used in Beijing and Hong Kong dollars is mainly used in Hong Kong and Macau.

You are advised to exchange Hong Kong dollars in Beijing in advance for the trip to Hong Kong and Macau. And Wechat Pay and Alipay are very popular in China, including Hong Kong and Macau, so you can open this service ahead of time and it will be very convenient.
Or you can use Union Pay card, which is the best way in Hong Kong and Macau by credit card.
