About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Traveling from Seattle to Singapore with a 12 hr layover in Xiamen?

I hold a US passport and will be in Xiamen for 12 hours. I have booked a hotel because it’s an overnight layover. Do I need a visa? And if I do, what about my flight back?

You don't need it as you can use 24h twov in Xiamen. On the way back, if your trip would be Singapore-Xiamen-Seattle, you can also use the 24h twov. No visa will be needed.
