X2 visa to X1 visa

Hello, I'm currently in China with a X2, and talking with my school to apply for the X1 since I want to stay here one more year, is it possible to apply for the X1 inside China or should I leave the country to do it?
They told me about going to HK or Korea, but if I can inside China, I won't leave.
