X2 visa to X1 visa

Hello, I'm currently in China with a X2, and talking with my school to apply for the X1 since I want to stay here one more year, is it possible to apply for the X1 inside China or should I leave the country to do it?
They told me about going to HK or Korea, but if I can inside China, I won't leave.

It's possible for you to do the change at the exit and entry administration of the local PSB within China. If it can succeed, you don’t need to go back to apply for that. Just give it a try.
