About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Travel via Shanghai airport to hotel for overnight stay prior to boarding cruise ship next day.

We are flying into Shanghai airport early morning on 4th January, leaving on a cruise ship from Shanghai on the evening of the 5th January, actual hours in China is over 24 hrs, What do we need and do, can we apply for a 72 hr twov. where do we apply for either and at what cost.

It depends what the first port off call is. If its a different country than the one you landed in Shanghai for, then you are eligible for the 144 hour transit without visa. You don't need to apply in advance you bring copy of your e-ticket and cruise documents, advise airline check in that you are taking advantage show them the documents and after landing apply at the transit without visa counter when you arrive in Shanghai.
