Tickets on different bookings?

So if I understand correctly, in order to get the 72h TWOV, the entire itinerary must be booked on the same ticket (necessitating a stopover in China), but for the 24h one I could use two different tickets (one from Country A to China, the second from China to Country B) and still qualify if the two are within 24hs of each other. Is that right?

Separate tickets are fine in all cases.
