About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Do I need a visa? I will be traveling non stop from LAX to HKG.

My question was do I need a visa for the return flight. I would be buying a one way ticket from HKG to PVG and PVG to LAX, stay in Shanghai for one day and half and then proceed to flying to LAX.

You do not as long as your return flights do not stop elsewhere in Mainland China.
