About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

48 hours in Shanghai

Does this work for going from country A to China and then return to country A? No third country, but in China for less than 48 hours. LHR-CDG-PVG-CDG-LHR

Of course that does not work. It's not a transit in China. You need a visa.
