About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Hi there, Flying to Shanghai via xian

Just wondering would the following scenario be eligible for the 144 hour free transit? If I fly from Melbourne to Shanghai (with a layover on Xian) then to Tokyo would I be eligible for the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai?

You are not eligible for the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai because of the layover in Xian. You are supposed to apply for a visa for your trip.
