About:144-hour Visa-free Transit in Beijing, Tianjin & Hebei

Hello, do I need to apply for the 144hr visa free if I only have a layover of 12hrs

12 hr layover from Australia to Rome and the same layover from the returning flights?

If you leave the airport instead of waiting inside then you need that visa. Basically, when you get your turn at the custom ... you have to tell that you want a free visa ... then the person will refer you to the right person to do it.
