About:144-hour Visa-free Transit in Beijing, Tianjin & Hebei

Do I qualify for 144hr visa Exemption if on my way back to USA I stop at Beijing China for 4 days?

USA to Japan (with 5hr layover in PEK, China). Will stay at airport till transfer flight ready.
Then from Japan to PEK China for 4 days before returning to USA. Do I DEFINITELY qualify for 144hr visa exemption when touring PEK, China for the 4 days? Or do I need to apply for visa? PLEASE HELP.

Your travel:
1. USA
2. normal transit in Beijing
3. Japan ===> Normal trip with only one landing (here as a transit) in China. You need nothing.

Return:
1. Japan
2. less than 6 days in a qualified (for less than 144 hours) city in China
3. USA

====> You only need that free visa requested at the custom in Beijing.

But no other airport accepted within a qualified free visa. Ex: Japan - 2 hours transit in Shanghai - 4 days in Beijing - USA. That would required a full visa. I know I had such transit and it cost me a lot of $$$.
