About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Hi. If I fly Vietnam-Beijing-Hong Kong-Vietnam, I should be OK for the 144h free transit, right?

to avoid getting a tourist visa. I need to stay in HK and not just have a layover, correct? Or can I just leave the airport and re-enter to be applicable for the 144hr free transit?

You don't need to stay in Hong Kong and you don't need to leave the airport. As soon as you are on your flight out of China, the Chinese immigration don't care what you do next.Of course, your Vietnam- Beijing flight must not have a stop in Hong Kong or another Chinese city.
