72 hr free visa transit on separate tickets

Hi,

I have a ticket BKK-PEK for NOV 22 18:00 and PEK-LAX on NOV 24 18:00, on separate tickets. Would that qualify for 72 hr free transit? And would visiting the great considered bejiing city limits?
