About:China Visa

Fly to Shanghai, get on Holland American cruise ship the next day.

I am a US citizen flying from the USA to Shanghai on Oct 28. I will stay that night, Oct 28, in Shanghai and then get on the Holland American cruise ship Westerdam at the Shanghai International Pier on Oct 29. The cruise ship will leave Shanghai on Oct 30 and travel to South Korea, Japan, Taiwan and the Philippines before arriving in Hong Kong early on Nov 12. Later in the day on Nov 12, I will fly from Hong Kong back to the USA.
Does my one night stay in Shanghai require a Tourist L, or does this travel plan allow me to qualify for the transit exemption?

Clark, you are able to apply for free transit in Shanghai, and no visa will be required for that. Nice trip.
