About:144-hour Visa-free Transit in Beijing, Tianjin & Hebei

I have a USA passport and would like to travel USA - Hong Kong - Beijing - USA.

Will I qualify for the 144 hour visa exemption?

During my online research I came across this question on a TripAdvisor forum and someone responded that Hong Kong was exempt (since USA passport holder has 90 days visa exemption there) so that route would be acceptable. I’ve read the policy numerous times and don’t know. Can you advise?
