About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Can a person with Italian passport living in Hong Kong visit Beijing or Shanghai for a weekend?

I am an Italian living and working in Hong Kong. I planned to spend a weekend visiting Beijing or Shanghai. Is that possible under the 72-Hour Free Transit in China? Or I need to apply for entry permit?
Thanks

You have to be "in transit" so the easiest for you is Macau-Beijing/Shanghai-HK. Just make sure the two flights are nonstop.

This means that I can not enter with the Visa-free if I fly HK-Shanghai-HK? or HK-Beijing-HK?
Thanks

You cannot because you are not in transit to a 3rd country or region. That's why it's called "transit without visa" and not "visit without visa"..

Just fly Hong Kong - Beijing - Macau or Macau - Beijing - Hong Kong and you can enjoy the visa-free policy (just replace Beijing with Shanghai and it´s the same situation).

To take the ferry from Hong Kong to Macau is very easy.
