About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Do I qualify for Visa free transit, or do I have to apply for a Visa

Hello,
I will be visitng China in August for a vacation.
First I plan on going to Hong Kong first via Shanghai.
Whilst I'm in Hong Kong, I plan on going to Xi'an for 6 days, before returning to Hong Kong for a further 2/3 days.
Afterwards, on the way back to London, I plan to stopover in Shanghai for 3 days (2 nights really).

Will I need to apply for an actual entry permit??

Thank you.

Also, all the flight tickets have been booked separately, so for example my flight from London to Hong Kong via Shanghai, were booked at separate times.

You definitely need a visa for Hong Kong-Xi'an-Hong Kong.
