About:144-hour Visa-free Transit in Shanghai, Zhejiang, and Jiangsu

Does the third country have to have an overnight stay?

I am a US citizen. I need to go to China for a week long meeting & don't have time for a VISA application. If I fly from the US to Shanghai (stay 6 nights), then to Hong Kong (for 1 night) & then back to the US. Would I qualify for the 144 Visa Free program?

Yes, of course, as long as you have no other stops in China, and your US to Shanghai doesn't stop in Hong Kong. You don't have to stop overnight.
