About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

My flight is JFK-PVG-MNL. My layover in PVG is almost 24 hours.

Can I use the 72 hr free transit so I can stay in the hotel? I have a 23hr and 30m layover in PVG before I depart to the MNL so I am planning to book a hotel for the night.

Its up to the immigration office if they will let you leave the airport for a stop under 24 hours. Most cases as long as you have advance hotel reservation you shouldn't have a problem. If scheduled under 24 hours they wont offer the full 144 hour transit without visa (formerly known as 72 hour Transit) only the 24 hour direct transit.

Thank you for your reply. This is very helpful. One clarification though, when you said it's up to the immigration if they would allow me to get out of the airport - what are the possible reasons that they would not allow me? I already booked my hotel where I would stay for only 1 night.

They do not generally give explicit reasons as it is not required for them to explain (not that many have the required English proficiency anyway). Most would just say it's their policy from a certain date and was a different policy before then. Of course, none of their policies are accessible to the public so you'll never know until you've tried.

So, I already booked my hotel and have my confirmation. Do i just show it to the immigration at Pudong International Aiport so they can let me go out of the airport?

That's really up to their policy of the day and you should be prepared in case you are not able to leave the airport.
