Allowable itinerary for 72 hour free transit

If my flight itinerary is Cathay Pacific, New York to Bejing (change planes in Hong Kong) visit 72 hours and then return to Hong Kong on Cathay Pacific and visit Hong Kong before returning to the USA can I use the 72 hour free transit?
