S1 vs L visa for US citizen

I will be joining my husband in China who is there on a Z work. Is there any advantage to having an S1 over an L? Disadvantages?

With an S1 ype in mainland China, you can get a residence permit which allows you to exit and enter for multiple times within its validity. But the L type doesn't allow you to apply for that.
