Can I get the 72hr visa

Hi I'm A US citizen flying to Beijing on standby for 2 days. do I need to fly to a different country after Beijing and then come back to the US for the 72 hour free transit or do I need to purchase a fix to the third country.then fly standby back to the usa?

You definitely cannot fly standby back to the USA. It is transit without visa (not a visa), and it is 144 hours not 72. You must fly Country A-Beijing-Country B, where A is different from B. A or B may be your home country, but it does not have to be. You must have a confirmed onward flight from Beijing (standby is not allowed) and you must fly it.
