I am a US citizen but I am planning to stay in china for 3 months to visit families. what kind of visa should i get and what documents do i need?

Hi, you can apply for a tourist L type for that, and you need to provide a filled-out application form affixed with a passport-style photo, your passport and its photocopy, round trip air tickets and hotel reservation or an invitation letter from your family.
