About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Does 72-hour rule apply?

We fly roundtrip to Hong Kong from Boston, and in between go to Xian roundtrip back to Hong Kong for 2.5 days. Does that qualify for the 72-hour transit exemption? or do we need a visa? We are having difficulty getting one in time for our departure on May 8th, because May 1st is a Chinese holiday. Thank you.
