About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

3rd country from China or involving China

Does the 3rd country rule have to be FROM China? I'm leaving S. Korea to China (3 days) back to U.S. U.S. citizen/passport, not leaving Shanghai while there, have hotels booked. This article states from China with regards to a 3rd country and so does the immigration web site.

If your travel route will be S. Korea-Shanghai (3 days)-U.S, you can use the 144 hr free transit, and no need to apply for a visa then.
