About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Visa for onward country

Hi! My friends and I are buying tickets to Laos. We plan to transit in Beijing and use the 72 hour free travel as we have confirmed onward seats to Vientiane. We have valid passports and have the passport pictures for our visas upon arrival in Laos but it looks like the rules for the 72 hour free travel require that we have that visa ahead of time? If we do not already have our Lao entry permit, but plan to get them upon arrival in Laos, are we allowed to use the free transit travel in China?

We do have a layover between PEK and Vientiane in Kunming. That city is on the list of 72 hour TWOV so we can still explore Beijing AND get to Laos with that layover correct. We don't plan to leave the airport at Kunming

When you wanna use the 72h twov, just 1 stop within China is allowed. So you won't qualify for the 72 hr free transit in China because of the layover in Kunming. Try to apply for a visa for the trip beforehand.

72 hour Transit Without Visa was replaced with 144 hour Transit Without Visa. All that is required is that you have a confirmed reservation to fly Country A > Beijing > Country B, it does not matter what country B is (just as long as its not same as country A) or what its entry requirements are for Country B. China is not concerned whether you meet entry requirements to Laos .

China just want to make sure you actually leave China. Now if you don't meet requirements to fly to Laos, you will probably be denied boarding in USA but that is unrelated to your ability to route through China. But I can confirm Laos allows visa on Arrival for US Passports so no need to worry about that part.

I assume that is the same when you use the 144 hour visa as well

Second stop in China limits to the 24 hour direct transit. Single stop allows for 144 or 72 whichever is available in the Chinese city
