About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

No visa required for S. Korea or China?

I'm departing U.S. and arriving in Shanghai on 4/19 but taking a 21 hr layover and flying to S. Korea on 4/20, arriving back to Shanghai on 4/26, staying for 3 days before departing for U.S. on 4/29. Do I have to apply for the 144 hr rule only on 4/26, since the 4/19 is just a connection or both times in China? I'm not sure if that 3 day period on 4/26-4/29 is ok since the next country is my home country (U.S.) rather than a 3rd country.

You can fly USA > Shanghai > S. Korea and stop in Shanghai for up to 144 hours as long as you have no other stops in china on the way to Korea (even if same plane). Once you are in S Korea, the 144 hour clock resets and you can do it again S. Korea > Shanghai > USA. One note for Shanghai is they wont let you leave the airport if stopping for under 24 hours unless you have a hotel booking in advance

Third country just means you cant do say Seoul > Beijing > Seoul since country arriving from and departing to are the same.
