About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

144 hr twov. US Passport.

Traveling USA(home country)-Tokyo(7 nights)-Beijing (4nights)-USA. Email from consulate tells me that bc USA is home country I won't qualify. Are they jut trying to sell me a visa? How can I get absolute verification I won't be turned down at the airport? Thanks

Hello, I am also really interested in this case. I will be travelling Germany-Japan-Shanghai-Germany, being a German citizen. Will I also not comply because I am leaving Shanghai heading for my home country?

Thanks in advance,

Thomas

Hi, personally I think both of your travel routes qualify for the visa-free transit, and no need to apply for visa. Maybe you can contact the airport to confirm this. Good luck.

@Levi, I don't know why they are telling you that you are ineligible. Do you have other stops (even if same plane) inside China? That is the only thing that would cause a problem with your itin. The fact you started in the US does not matter. Tokyo > Beijing > USA allows up to 144 hour transit without visa. All that matters is the country immediately before and after China need to be different countries.

@Thomas you should be fine as well, Japan-Shanghai-Germany is legal routing as long as no other stops in China. Where you were before Japan does not matter when it comes to the Transit With Out Visa. Now if stop in Shanghai is under 24 hours they may not let you leave the airport if you don't have a hotel reservation.
