72 hour Visa - We are traveling from Tokyo to Beijing and then to the U.S.

Can we stop in Beijing for 72 hours? Thee is a wedding that we want to attend. Our ticket would be Tokyo to Beijing then Beijing to U.S. This is not part of one ticket that just happens to go through Beijing - we are specifically getting the ticket to Beijing. Is that OK for a 72 hour stay in Beijing? Thank you.
