About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

72 hour and 144 hour visa

Are you able to utilize both the free transit in Beijing and the free transit in Shanghai if you leave China and come back through. Here is an example: Fly to Shanghai from Japan (use the 144 hour free transit) leave from Shanghai to Hanoi, Vietnam. Then fly to Beijing (use the 72 hour free transit) then leave from Shanghai to the US. Is this a possibility since you would transit through China each way, but always to a third country?

Yes, you don't need a transit visa to fly like that if your passport is from one of the 53 qualifying countries.

You will need a visa for the flight home. Hanoi > Beijing > Shanghai > USA limits you to 24 hours in China on the return.

I just realized the error in my post, we would fly home hanoi- Beijing- US. My initial question was if I were to stay in Shanghai on the way to Hanoi and stay in Beijing on the way back to the US, could I use the transit Visa each way?

Both Hanoi- Beijing- US and US-Shanghai-Hanoi will be fine to use the free transit policy.
