Visa for day trip

Does my son need a visa to go to China for the day from Hong Kong? He will be staying with Western friends in HK who only have ID cards and not Home Return Cards. They want to take him to China for the day and return that night. Thank you, Donna

Yes, you son needs to apply for a visa because HK-China-HK is not a transit.
