Going into shanghai twice - am I still visa exempt?

We fly from Manchester via Germany to shanghai, stay 3 nights, leave from the shanghai cruise port to japan for 5 days, back to shanghai cruise port and stay one more night before leaving the following evening. Do I need a visa? Presumably the first stay would fit with the 144 waiver rule but what happens when we come back to port? Please help!

If the next stop after Shanghai is not Japan, you can still enjoy the visa-free transit in Shanghai.

After Japan, we sail into shanghai and stay another night then fly back to Manchester, via Germany. Will that be ok?
