About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Stop on Outbound Flight in Hong Kong

If an outbound flight from Shanghai stops in Hong Kong (Shanghai -> HK -> Paris) can this still be used for 144 TWOV since HK is considered a third country, or must the outbound flight be direct? Thanks for your help.

If the last stop before Shanghai is not HK, then you can use the 144 hr free transit and the outbound flight doesn't need to be direct.
