We are traveling from the US to Beijing, staying for two days, then going to Hong Kong for a week.

We will return to BJ on a Friday and plan to spend the evening in a hotel before flying back to the US. Will we need a visa? Or can I use free transit.

I presume you hold US passport. Well then, you don't need a visa. And you qualify for 72/144h visa free transit for both trips.
