About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Hkg-Bjing Bjing-Chicago

Hi can I use the 24/72 free transit if my connecting flights are separate tickets? I will have one round trip hk-bj and one round trip bj-chi. Together they make up my hkg to Chicago routing. In this case the 24/72h free can be used?
