About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Visiting Shanghai. Will that be a problem for obtaining a 144 hour visa?

I'm a US citizen stopping by Shanghai on my way back to New York from Seoul. The flight from Shanghai to New York includes a layover back in Seoul.

You need a visa because Seoul-Shanghai-Seoul is not transit.
