About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Flying Melbourne to Osaka via Guangzhou, is visa required?

Is a 24 hour transit visa required if the stopover in Guangzhou is less than 4 hours?

There's no such thing as a 24 hour transit visa. If your connection is 4 hours in Guangzhou, and you have an Australian passport, then you don't need a visa. It will be a simple international-to-international connection in Guangzhou, just follow the signs.
