About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Seoul - Beijing - Singapore on two different airlines

I am a US citizen traveling from Seoul to Singapore. If I book two flights: one from Seoul to Beijing and a second from Beijing to Singapore on two different airlines but with under 72 hours in Beijing do I qualify for 72-hour visa free travel?
Also, in that time will I be able to visit the Great Wall?
