How do we qualify for the 144 hr VISA?  We would love to see other areas if they are close so we are not using the 6 days traveling to get to places.  What is an example of a doable itinerary that will allow us to qualify for the 6 day visa and also see a lot of things.  Do you have to fly to other areas for the VISA to count?

You must fly non-stop to a third country after Shanghai to qualify for 144 hours visa-free transit (which is not a visa). Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macao all count as third countries. An example itinerary would be USA-Shanghai-Hong Kong-USA. USA-Shanghai-USA isn't a transit and you need a tourist visa in advance for that.
