About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I am flying from the US to Shanghai and will be spending 6 days there and then headed back to US.

How do we qualify for the 144 hr VISA? We would love to see other areas if they are close so we are not using the 6 days traveling to get to places. What is an example of a doable itinerary that will allow us to qualify for the 6 day visa and also see a lot of things. Do you have to fly to other areas for the VISA to count?

You must fly non-stop to a third country after Shanghai to qualify for 144 hours visa-free transit (which is not a visa). Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macao all count as third countries. An example itinerary would be USA-Shanghai-Hong Kong-USA.

USA-Shanghai-USA isn't a transit and you need a tourist visa in advance for that.
