About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Will the 72 hour visa suffice for 1 day in Beijing (to visit the Great Wall)

All of our passports are British/Irish, are we ok to use the 72 hour visa for flying from Hong Kong to Beijing and back to Hong Kong in under 72 hours?

No, you do not qualify for 144 hours visa-free transit (which is not a free visa) because Hong Kong-Beijing-Hong Kong isn't a transit. You must have a visa in advance to travel like that.
