Am arriving in Tianjin by cruise ship and then staying in Beijing for three nights.

How do I get this on my uk passport as most advice I have looked at only mentions airport

Ruth, if you travel country A-Tianjin & Beijing –country B, you will qualify for the 144 hour free transit. When arriving at Tianjin international port, you can apply for the 144 hour free transit at the immigration office there.
