living in australia but on new zealand passports

My husband and I are going on a cruise leaving from Shanghai on 30/03/2018 and includes 3 days in Bejiing. We are having 1 extra day in Shanghai prior to the cruise. We live in Australia but have New Zealand passports. I was told by a New Zealand staff member at a consulate that we did not need visa's, but I am sceptical about this advice.
