I will be arriving from Vietnam in Shanghai; transiting in Shanghai

and flying out of Shanghai for my final destination in the USA.

I arrive in Shanghai in the evening, and my flight out of Shanghai is stand-by for the following morning, and I will not have a confirmed seat on the flight until I check in the next morning.

Do I need any special documents for this transit? Will this require a permit or visa?

And can I stay in a hotel for the night? Or do I need to stay in the airport until the next morning to get my standby flight?

Stand-by flight is a no-no for visa-free transit. (I assume you know what stand-by means.)

I have flown stand by my entire life, so totally understand the definition. It's just hard to convey to the Chinese government that even though unconfirmed, I have no intention of hanging around. Thanks for your comment!
