About:Chinese Embassy in U.S.A.

We are flying round trip from the US to Shanghai, staying in Shanghai for two nights,

and then flying round trip from Shanghai to Bali (with a 1.5 hour layover in Xiamen). On our return from Bali to Shanghai, we'll spend one night in Shanghai, and then return to the US. Will we be able to get a 72-hour free transit for the two nights in Shanghai at the beginning of the trip, and another free transit visa for the one night stay in Shanghai at the end of our trip?

Susan, you cannot enjoy the free transit for your first stop in Shanghai. You need to apply for a transit G type.
For your return trip, you can use the free transit in Shanghai.
