Entering Shanghai on a Cruise Ship

Instead of flying in, we are ending our cruise in SH on 4-16-18. We are visiting Jiangsu province for a couple of days and are booked on a flight back to U.S.A on 4-18-18, do we need visa or the 72 hour or 144 hour no visa covers us? Could somebody who has entered SH on a cruise answer this question?
Thanks

I hope the previous station of your cruise is not USA, and it is an international country or area. Then you can enjoy the 144h visa-frere policy. Also I have to mention that the 72h visa-free transit is only for airplane passengers.
