What does it mean if a Chinese young man calls me Mom

There is a Chinese restaurant where we go often and have made friends with several of the people there. One young man calls me Mom.
He is always polite and nice. He also gave my teenage daughter a Teddy Bear,a turtle necklace and 12 Happy face helium balloons. If a boy did this in the United States, we'd say he liked the girl, yet he says she is his sister.
Please help.

Oh, according to this situation, I think the 'Mom' means nominal mother, in Chinese pronunciation 'Gan Ma'. It is an affectionate term that expresses intimate relationship. The young man considers your daughter as his sister. So he calls you 'Mom' like your daughter did.

It could be his accent. He could be saying ma'am, but his Chinese accent could be making it sound like he was saying mom.
